3G/4G Development in China July 18-24

- At the "China Unicom WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) Terminal Chain Summit" held on July 19, Chinese telecom operator China Unicom showcased 15 new WCDMA products, including a HSPA+ Smartphone jointly developed with Samsung and was launched on the same day as well as two Wophones, the SinoCast News reported on July 19. Aside from Samsung, other mobile phone manufacturers also showcased their WCDMA phone products, including Sony Ericsson, Motorola, LG, HTC, and Coolpad, with their products projected to hit the market around the second half of 2011, according to the same source. Meanwhile, it is learnt that China Unicom is due to launch its first Wophone platform-powered Smartphone.  

 
In addition, as part of its efforts to upgrade its 3G network in over 10 provinces, China Unicom recently revealed its product strategy set for high-end mobile phones which can be divided into three categories: the first includes high performance, high speed mobile phones featuring the HSPA+ (High Speed Packet Access) connection and dual core CPU (Central Processing Unit); the second includes stylish mobile phones featuring HD recording, ultra-thin design, and high resolution; the third includes mobile phones featured rich applications and functions, the Sohu News reported on July 20.
 
Thus far, China Unicom already completed upgrading its 3G network in 56 cities across China, improving the maximum downlink speed to 21.6 Mbps. The first batch of HSPA data card products is now available in these 56 cities since May this year.
 

- In the wake of the launch of the Moto MT870 high- end TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous CDMA) phone, China Mobile recently announced that it plans to collaborate with international brands, including Samsung, HTC, and LG, to jointly launch several high-end TD-SCDMA phone models, the Sina News reported on July 19. Furthermore, it is learnt that China Mobile is projected to launch more high-end products developed by Nokia and Sony Ericsson. In 2011 thus far, the number of mobile phone models launched by China Mobile at a price tag of less than 1,000 RMB (US$; US$1 = RMB) already totaled 108, increasing by four fold the number that the company achieved around the same time last year, according to the same source.
